Phillip Kapraun
Dr. Phillip Kapraun - Veterinarian with Focus on Equine Lameness
Since 1984, Dr. Phillip Kapraun has led the Harvard Equine Practice in Harvard, Illinois. He provides veterinary services focused on standardbred race horses and lameness issues. Some of the breeds he treats are barrel racers, reining horses, racing quarter horses, and Western pleasure horses. Dr. Phillip Kapraun has in-depth knowledge of osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), an issue affecting equine joints, and has published numerous articles on the subject. He has also studied bone cysts and other bone abnormalities in yearling Standardbred racehorses.
Dr. Kapraun finds solace in faith and was a candidate for the Roman Catholic Church priesthood. He earned his degree in religion from the St. Francis Seminary in Cincinnati, where he excelled as valedictorian, graduating magna cum laude. He completed an undergraduate degree in Veterinary Science at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and a doctoral degree at the same institution.
During his time in college, Dr. Kapraun achieved recognition as a four-year undefeated intramural wrestling champion who was a recipient of the Omega Tau Sigma veterinary fraternity’s "Most Valuable Athlete" award. He subsequently earned a black belt in Taekwondo and studied Aikido and Tang So Do, coaching wrestling for a decade at junior high school levels. Dr. Phillip Kapraun is active with the American and Illinois State Veterinary Medical Associations, and is a North American Association of Race Track Veterinarians’ founding member.
